We’ve heard the rave about the cupcakes from Plain Vanilla Bakery. We’ve seen the pretty storefront Instagram pictures tagged at a location that indicates ‘Plain Vanilla’. And today, we’re giving the sweet treats sold at the cupcake specialist a try!
Nearest MRT Station: Tiong Bahru
Plain Vanilla Bakery started off with an earnest desire for a good old-fashioned cake. Days when we yearn for layers of buttercream and light sponge cake, a slice of warm pound cake, or frosted cupcakes on a rainy day. This café at Tiong Bahru’s Yong Siak Street has a warm, earthy feel, lined with old bicycles, antique furniture, wooden tables and benches.
With the approaching year end X’mas period, we see Plain Vanilla enter the festive season through the display of Christmas decorations. We love the little white doves and golden ornaments lighting up the mini Christmas tree sitting quaintly on the reading table decked with fashion magazines.
On days when the public library is packed with bookworms and students mugging for papers, drop by Plain Vanilla. Chill with a cuppa and delectable treats as you type away on your laptops or grab a book you desire.
Let’s not forget to mention a plus point of getting buried in books over at Plain Vanilla with the cozy corner designed by the side with a couple of fluffy cushions. Help yourselves to serviettes and cold water infused in fruits.
Received a warm and fuzzy feel when I entered the storehouse. A supporter of local arts, Plain Vanilla plays tunes by local musicians and spreading the word for home-grown artists and designers. In addition, a wide array of plain jars, ingredients in paper bags, and monochrome designer goods are shelved neatly at the entrance. Customers can pick from a range of home-made items as well as goods imported overseas, as mentioned from the staff members.
Always baked fresh, Plain Vanilla uses only the best of ingredients; French butter, pure Madagascar Bourbon vanilla, bittersweet Belgian chocolate, perfectly ripe bananas, without artificial preservatives. Their ingredients are supplied locally so customers can be assured that their eggs are fresh and coffee beans are newly roasted.
Adapting an environmentally-friendly practice, the company avoids non-biodegradable materials in their packaging and opts for recyclable paper instead. It also means reusing jars for storing spices to reduce waste. In fact, for every used 6-cupcake or 12-cupcake box a customer returns to them, Plain Vanilla flat-packs them for recycling, and hands you a free cupcake in exchange!
Snuggled up nicely by the cozy corner, I started unwrapping my boxes of treats in excitement. I ordered four cupcakes in totality, with two teacakes and 100g of cookies. The only pity was how many items have already been sold out when I arrived in the evening.
Earl Grey Lavender cupcake ($3.5)
I finally understood the hype over Plain Vanilla cupcakes after my first bite. They provide delectable cakes with moist and fluffy sponge cake. There was a strong hint of lavender and earl grey tea, topped off with buttercream with tiny sprinkles of earl grey. I was extremely glad I ordered two of these flavoured cupcakes because I’ve never tasted ANYTHING like that and it leaves me wanting for more! Do give this a try when you’re there because it’s not something you’d want to miss out on.
Red Velvet cupcake ($3.5)
A crimson-coloured light Valrhona-cocoa cake with vanilla cheese frosting layered over the signature fluffy sponge cake specially concocted at Plain Vanilla which I absolutely LOVE.
Dark Chocolate Ganache ($3.5)
The Valrhona dark chocolate cupcake was smothered in bittersweet chocolate ganache and dipped in crunchy cocoa nibs. A reminder to consume sips of water simultaneously to prevent a sugar rush with the high sugar intake!
Black & White Cookies ($6 for 100g)
A layer of sweet cream sandwiched between thick, chocolate cookies. These black and white cookies are the perfect dessert to end off your dinner meals!
Sticky Toffee Teacake ($7.5)
Topped off with fresh, crunchy walnuts, the sticky toffee teacake contains the perfect sweetness of toffee, drizzled over soft Plain Vanilla sponge cake. A great choice for Christmas!
Raspberry Lime Teacake ($7.5)
An exceptionally unique flavoured dessert. I enjoyed the fruit raspberry bits that filled the sponge cake, as well as the coating of white chocolate glaze that melted over the teacake. It might be towards the higher end of the scale of sweetness but definitely a favourite for sugar lovers!
Would I visit the café again? Yes, yes and yes! Even though it might be a teeny bit inaccessible in my opinion, I can never say no to another Earl Grey Tea cupcake or the other available flavours that I’ve never gotten the chance to try the other day. The service was extremely great as the young lady who served me never failed to have a smile plastered on her face. Extra points for a lovely ambience!
